Trips
The Department of Architecture and Building Science is very keen on providing the students with field trips to building sites to view and learn from buildings under construction, under the supervision of courses professors. This is to link the theoretical lectures and practical exercises in Building Construction courses to the reality of construction on site, and learn about the building industry in the Kingdom.
Providing the students with a full understanding of building materials, structural systems, as well as Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) systems, will enable them to take the right decisions later on in professional practice. During these visits, the students listen to explanations by site engineers and supervisors and ask questions about how it all works. The students documented these observations and submit reports on field visits as part of the requirements of course work.
During the last few semesters field trips were conducted to many sites under construction, notably the following:
- Headquarters building of the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu
- The College of Business Administration at KSU
- Girls Campus college buildings at KSU
- SABIC Research Center at Riyadh Techno-Valley
- Conference Center at King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology (KACIST)
- Temporary Fresh Concrete factory, by ‘Al-Bustan’ within KSU Campus
- Temporary Pre-Cast Concrete factory, by ‘Bin-Laden’ within KSU Campus
The Department also organizes field trips as part of Studio Courses. The list of sites visited is very long, but notable examples of field trips during last year 2011-2012 are:
- Two Headquarter buildings at King Abdullah Financial City (KAFC)
- SABIC Headquarters Building and its Training center
